Friday's Letters

{Follow me on Instagram: @emrenken}

Dear Kayla and Courtney, I love this picture of us! We look so bright and summery! {Is summery even a word?} Dear yoga, I'm so glad we have been reunited! Although I'm really sore today, and I have carpet burn on my shoulder from my "fall" while practicing my newest pose in the living room last night I know that you really do want what's best for me. Dear B, I have really enjoyed cooking for you this week. Maybe we'll have "yummy tacos" next week? Dear Princess, I am soooooo sorry for literally kicking you out of our bed on Tuesday night! I love putting your little doggy bed at the foot of our bed when B is gone, and I promise I didn't mean to kick off! I hope you'll forgive me. Dear Facebook, I'm considering deleting you. I'm just not sure if I want to completely delete my profile or if I want to simply delete the app from my phone. After giving you up for Lent I just feel like I'm better off without you. Dear blog friends, Your sweet and supportive comments on Tuesday's post meant so much to me. It's crazy how close the blogger community really is, considering we are spread out across the country. You guys amaze me! Dear fellow bloggers again, I'm thinking about changing my blogger URL. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Happy Friday, everyone!!

The story of the last six months: Why I quit my job & Looking ahead

This is going to be long, but before I can fully move on from this stage of my life I need to write it all out. It's the best form of therapy for me, so if you're reading thanks for being my therapist!

~~~
It's time we had a heart-to-heart about what's really been going on. If you've been reading for a while then you probably noticed a few months ago when my posts became less frequent and more vague. I've had a lot going on in the last few months, and for personal and professional reasons I did not want to share too much.
Let me start from the beginning...
Back in November I finally had the opportunity to start working as a child life specialist again. {Child life positions are few and far between, and I had been watching the hospital's job board ever since we moved.} The position I accepted was in the ER, working Sunday through Thursday, three to eleven-thirty in the evening. The schedule wasn't ideal, but at the time Brandon was still in his training program, and his hours were crazy, too.
In the beginning things seemed to be going okay. I was facing challenges, for sure, but I did my best to remain positive. I set goals, and I put my best foot forward.
Then in January our prayers for guidance were answered, and Brandon was offered a new position. With this new position {that we were very excited about!} came new hours. After a year and a half of waiting Brandon was finally working a mostly eight to five schedule. The only problem? My schedule was completely opposite.
We did our best to make it work. We tried making the most of our days off, and Brandon did his best {poor thing!} to wait up for me each night. We tried. We tried everything we could think of, but it just wasn't working.
Brandon worked every other weekend, I worked on Sundays, and our schedules were opposite every other day of the week. All of that combined meant we got to spend a total of four days together each month with mostly phone conversations in between. It was tough. And it started to take a toll on too many aspects of my life.
After countless prayers, too many tears, and lots of valuable advice from my closest family and friends, I turned in my resignation.
I think some people wondered why it took me so long to actually make this decision, and looking back I can see why. But first of all, I'm stubborn. I'm also determined, and for a while I was determined to make this work.
Second of all, I think the hardest thing to do in life is give up something that you love. I love child life, and I worked my *** off to become a child life specialist in the first place. It took a lot of courage to step away and accept that this job wasn't the right fit for me, but it just wasn't
Lastly, I didn't want to feel like I had given up. I wanted to know that I had done everything I could and given this job my absolute best.
After turning in my resignation I immediately felt like a weight had been lifted.
I was lucky enough to have a supportive boss who completely understood where I was coming from. I had been honest with her from the beginning, so she knew this was a possibility. I told her that I was still very interested in child life, and we agreed that if a day position opens I'll reapply.
I left last Wednesday knowing that I gave this hospital and this department everything I had for as long as I could. I did my best, and even though I was only there for a short time I felt proud of my contributions.
~~~

Everyone keeps asking me "What's next?" {I feel like I could be in Julian's film on One Tree Hill.} And honestly? I don't know how to answer that. Of course I have a picture painted in my head of how I want the next year to play out, but I'm continually learning that those self-painted-pictures rarely become a reality.

So we will see. Right now my priority is catching up on quality time with Brandon. We've spent the last two years stressing about either his job or mine, so now it's time to focus on us. And the rest? I'm hoping it will all fall into place.

A moment in my day

This is a moment I never want to forget.

At the end of each night in the ER I come back up to the child life office, sit at down at my desk, and this is my view. No matter what time it is, or how late I've stayed, I always take a moment to just sit. I take a few deep breathes and try to think of all the positive moments in my day. If it's been a tough day, one of those days, that's when these items come into play. *My list of goals *A note from a co-worker that says "you're amazing!" *Photos that remind me I'm part of a team *Artwork created for me by patients *A thank you note from a sweet group of nursing students. They're simple things, really, but they mean so much to me. These are the things things that inspire me.

I'm so glad I captured this moment, so that I can remember it for years to come.

Weekend Update

I know I fell behind on my daily posts, but I was in Austin this weekend spending time with some of my favorite girls!

It was a quick trip, but we managed to squeeze in a little shopping, several yummy restaurants, an afternoon of manicures and pedicures, and heartfelt good-for-the-soul conversation. And...we made a promise to make this happen a lot more often. I'm holding us to it, girls!

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Day 3, I'm on a roll! Things that make me uncomfortable...

{Taking awkward selfies to show B how much we miss him when he's gone}

I hate when my jeans that are too tight or my heels are too high. I don't like it when people argue in front of me and expect me to take a side. I feel uncomfortable when someone asks my opinion, and the truth isn't what that person wants to hear. Any type of confrontation makes me nervous. Strapless bras are the worst. My face turns red when I'm questioned and put on the spot in front of a group of people. I feel awkward dancing in public. I get nervous when I'm ordering a drink at a bar, and I don't know what I want. I hate making any type of decision, really. Trying to compliment someone's baby when I don't know if it's a boy or a girl is never fun. I'm horrible at making small talk. I don't like calling people to say happy birthday, because I never know what else to say.

What makes you uncomfortable?

Something I know {nothing} about

I was originally going to share a piece of my child development knowledge, but I'm saving that for another day. Instead I'll share with you the latest from my garden.

Somehow my tomato plants went from this...

to this...

And I have no idea how.

If I was going to tell you how to plant a successful garden I'd say put the plants in the ground and let nature take its course. Give them a little water each week, but don't go overboard. Too much fertilizer early on will stunt their growth, and similar to stubborn teenagers they will flourish only when you give them time and space to do things at their own pace.

I really know nothing about growing a garden. I just happen to get lucky this year. If anyone wants fresh cherry tomatoes you're welcome to come down! At this point I have way more than I can eat!

Story of MY Life

{Dad, Mom, Michelle, Me, Brandon}

I grew up in a small, Texas town where I learned the value of family, hard work and true friendship.

As a child I spent many days outside with my dad, building and painting, sanding and sawing. And when I wasn't outside I was in our playroom living out of a dress-up box filled with dance costumes and my MaMaw’s old dresses.

In junior high I survived my first cheerleading tryout, and from that moment on I lived for football games and cheerleading camp. During my seventh grade year the boy I had a crush on asked me to be his girlfriend, and ten years later I married him.

I was a cheerleader and yearbook editor in high school, and I spent way too much time stressing about my grades. Occasionally my friends and I would go out to the Emotions dances that were held in neighboring towns, but those nights were always awkward for me. {I could never shake-it-like-a-salt-shaker without looking absolutely ridiculous.}

The next four years were some of the best years of my life. I laughed, loved and learned so much during my time at Texas, and I made friends and memories that will always be a part of who I am.

In 2010 I graduated from college, landed my dream job, and married the boy who’d asked me to be his girlfriend ten years earlier. We lived our first sixth months in Austin, and then made the grown up decision to move away from the city we loved in hopes of a stronger future.

Since then we've learned a lot about life, love, marriage, and how to get through the hard times together.

I’d like to think that after twenty-five years I've made at least a small impact on this earth, and I hope the next twenty-five years will be as fulfilling as the last.
